Missed the blood moon? Next one is years away. See best Florida photos

Early risers in Florida might have caught a glimpse of the only blood moon of 2026.

If you slept in or simply couldn’t see the blood moon in your area, which occurred early Tuesday morning, March 3, during the total lunar eclipse, you’ll have to wait more than three years for the next one.

The next total lunar eclipse visible across Florida will be June 26, 2029, according to space.com. There is one before then, on New Year’s Eve in 2028, however it will not be seen from Florida at all.

What time was the blood moon?

In Florida, the eclipse was set to begin at 3:44 a.m. ET as the Earth’s shadow begins to move across the face of the moon.

Totality came at 6:33 a.m. when the moon was low on the horizon and close to sunrise at 6:43 a.m.

What is a total lunar eclipse?

A total lunar eclipse happens when the Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon, casting its shadow across the moon.

The Earth blocks most of the sun’s light from reaching the moon and the light that does reach the moon is filtered through a thick slice of Earth’s atmosphere, according to NASA.

Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to watch without sunglasses or protective eyewear.

What is a blood moon?

Lunar eclipses are often called “blood moons” because the moon appears dark red or orange.

When is the next blood moon, total lunar eclipse?

The next total lunar eclipse will not be until New Year’s Eve in 2028, and it will not be visible from Florida at all.

The next total lunar eclipse visible from Florida will occur on June 26, 2029, according to Time and Date.
