Merritt Island borrow pit could triple in size for NASA projects

Brevard County commissioners Tuesday will consider plans to triple the size of a Merritt Island borrow pit to provide fill for construction projects at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

Spacewalk Groves, Inc. is requesting change a prior county Conditional Use Permit on about 41 acres just north of Floyd Lane and south of North Courtenay Parkway, expanding an existing borrow pit there from 11 acres to 37.5 acres, primarily “to support construction projects at the Space Center.”

According to county zoning documents:

When finished, the excavated area will be incorporated into a larger private drainage system which will allow for more flood control, benefiting surrounding properties, according to the applicant. Directly north and east of the pit is the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. To the south, along North Courtenay Parkway, is Airgas USA, LLC, supplier of industrial, medical and specialty gases. To the west is Communication Towers Inc.
