Gainesville man indicted on federal drug and firearm charges

A Gainesville man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on multiple drug and firearm charges, according to an announcement made March 4 by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

Eddie Jerome Scott, 38, is charged with two counts of distribution of methamphetamine; one count of possession with intent to distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine, cocaine and fentanyl; possession of a firearm in connection with drug trafficking; and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.

Scott appeared for arraignment in federal court in Gainesville before United States Magistrate Judge Midori A. Lowry. A jury trial is scheduled for March 25 at 8:30 a.m. before Chief District Judge Allen C. Winsor.

If convicted, Scott faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison and up to 40 years for each distribution of methamphetamine count. He also faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison on the possession with intent to distribute charge, a mandatory minimum of five years and up to life in prison for possessing a firearm in connection with drug trafficking, and up to 15 years in prison for possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.

The case stems from a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Gainesville Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Christie S. Utt is prosecuting the case.
