Gainesville Regional Utilities is now offering GenerLink devices for a one-time fee.

These devices are priced near cost and installed by GRU crews, so there is no need to hire an electrician. GenerLink is a safe, utility-approved device that connects a portable generator directly to a home’s electrical panel. Depending on the generator’s capacity, a homeowner can power essential appliances or their entire electrical panel.

Cost: $1,034.25 (includes installation and power cord).

Florida Animal Friend grant for spay/neuter Service

Florida Animal Friend, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing pet overpopulation, announced the 2025 recipients of the organization’s statewide grant awards. This funding provides the opportunity for municipal and non-profit organizations to focus on no-cost and low-cost spay and neuter programs throughout Florida. Florida Animal Friend, celebrating 20 years of advocacy, awarded a total of $756,228 to various organizations based on their applications, which are reviewed by the Florida Animal Friend grant review committee.

The organization’s grant funds come from the sale of the Florida Animal Friend specialty vehicle license plate with cat and dog images highlighting the spay and neuter message.

In the highly-competitive application process, organizations are weighed on criteria including an understanding of overpopulation issues, thorough communication, plan development, implementation and whether resources and talent needed to implement such planning are in place.

Resurfacing of 53rd Avenue Begins Aug. 17

Alachua County Public Works will begin Phase 1 of the resurfacing of Northeast/Northwest 53rd Avenue on Aug. 17.

Watson Construction will complete the $7.6 million project, which will resurface the 3.8-mile roadway from U.S. Highway 441 to North Main Street. In addition to resurfacing, a new left-turn lane will be added at Northeast 15th Street, and the existing left-turn lane at the Waldo Road intersection will be extended.

To minimize daytime traffic disruptions, all construction will take place at night, from 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. During these hours, both eastbound and westbound lanes will be closed. The closures are expected to continue until November.

Drivers are urged to follow posted detour signs, use caution, remain alert, and maintain safe speeds when traveling through the area. Delays are expected, and motorists should plan accordingly.
