The high school softball postseason is officially here.
The action begins Wednesday, May 6, with the region quarterfinals for Classes 1A-4A. Buchholz, although in 6A, will begin that same day at Navarre due to bad weather on the Panhandle.
Gainesville High in Class 5A starts on Thursday, May 7, along with the Rural teams. That classification skips the quarterfinals due to its small size.
The Gainesville area has seen massive success in the circle this season, and that showed with the matchups as 14 teams earned bids. In the final rankings that accompanied the reveal, five squads – Columbia, Trenton, Santa Fe, Gainesville High and Branford – are in the top 60 statewide. All five earned No. 1 or 2 seeds in their region.
Trenton is a two-time defending state champion, Branford and GHS each suffered heartbreaking, walk-off state title losses two years ago and Columbia and Santa Fe don’t want to miss the chance at having legendary talent.
And then there’s eight other teams – such as Buchholz in an end to its long playoff drought – and contenders like Newberry and Williston.
