FAMU softball, FAMU baseball enjoy Easter weekend SWAC sweeps

Florida A&M’s softball and baseball teams are rolling.

Both have won six consecutive games and have swept their last two Southwestern Athletic Conference series.

Softball (22-14, 13-2 in SWAC) blanked Alabama A&M (16-22, 3-11 in SWAC) in a two-day, three-game series in Tallahassee on Veronica Wiggins Field.

The Rattlers beat the Bulldogs 6-0 on Thursday, April 2, and 9-1 and 8-6 on Friday, April 3.

The series included FAMU pitcher Zoryana Hughes pitching a seven-inning no-hitter in Friday’s matchup. Samantha Smith and Amari Brown also earned wins on the mound for the Rattlers.

For the weekend, FAMU outhit Alabama A&M 33-11. Friday’s second game was a 15-hit showing for the Rattlers, led by three apiece by Jamison Townsend and Amya Ramons.

FAMU softball next travels to play Jacksonville University for a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 7, at 6 p.m. A SWAC series against Alabama State, led by former FAMU head coach Camise Patterson, follows on April 10 and 11.

The FAMU baseball team’s streak continued in Texas at Prairie View A&M.

The Rattlers (15-14, 10-2 in SWAC) beat the Panthers (6-24, 2-10 in SWAC) 17-14 on Thursday, 10-6 on Friday, and 14-4 to complete the sweep on Saturday, April 4 at Prairie View’s Tankersley Field.

FAMU outhit Prairie View 39-27.

The Rattlers had 19 hits on Thursday. Justen Crews led the charge with four hits.

Pitchers Caleb Granger, Garrett Workman, and Jesus Campa all earned wins for the Rattlers over the weekend.

The Rattlers travel to Troy on Wednesday, April 8, and then will be on the road for another SWAC series against Jackson State from April 10 until April 12.
