A man was fatally shot by U.S. Secret Service and local law enforcement after breaching a secure perimeter at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home and club, around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 22.
The man was identified as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin of Carthage, North Carolina, by Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
Martin was reported missing by his family a few days ago, Reuters reported, citing a source familiar with the investigation.
He was spotted by two secret service agents and a Palm Beach County Sheriff deputy Sunday morning at the north gate of Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, carrying “what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can,” according to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.
President Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago nor in Florida at the time.
Here’s what we know.
Who was the armed man fatally shot at Mar-a-Lago?
The man has not been identified by law enforcement and will not be until next of kin are notified.
In a Feb. 22 news conference, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said the man was in his early 20s and was spotted just inside of Mar-a-Lago’s north gate about 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
Was the man shot by Mar-a-Lago armed?
The young man was seen by the north gate of Mar-a-Lago’s property in Palm Beach carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can. Officers ordered the man to drop the shotgun and gas can, Bradshaw said.
The man then lowered the gas can but “raised the shotgun to a shooting position,” at which point the investigating agents began to shoot, killing him, according to the sheriff.
Who responded to Mar-a-Lago incident?
U.S. Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy spotted and confronted the man at Mar-a-Lago, and “shots were fired by law enforcement during the encounter,” according to a social post by the federal agency.
At a 9:30 a.m. press conference, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said he didn’t know how many rounds the agents fired, or whether the man was known to law enforcement prior to this incident. He said the deputy was wearing an active body-camera at the time of the shooting but did not indicate when the footage will be released.
The Secret Service post stated that the suspect’s background, actions, potential motive and use of force is being investigated by the FBI, Secret Service and PBSO.
The involved Secret Service agents involved will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, according to agency policy, the post stated.
FBI asks Palm Beach residents for local camera footage
The FBI is asking residents who live in the area around Mar-a-Lago to check any cameras on their properties and share that footage with the agency, Brett Skiles, special agent in charge of the Miami field office, said during the news conference.
Anyone with footage can call 800-CALL-FBI (800-225-5324) or PBSO at 561-688-3400.
Where is Mar-a-Lago?
President Donald Trump’s private club and Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago, is located at 1100 South Ocean Blvd. in Palm Beach, Florida.
Following the incident, South Ocean Boulevard is closed between Southern Boulevard and South County Road the morning of Sunday, Feb. 22, Palm Beach officials said in an alert sent at 4:57 a.m.

President Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago at the time of the incident, nor was he in Florida.
He was Washington, D.C., where he held a breakfast for governors on Saturday, Feb. 21, at the White House.
The agency’s social post also said that no Secret Service “protectees” were at the location at the time of the incident.
