Ludvig Åberg moved to the Ponte Vedra Beach area a few years ago, so maybe it makes sense that he’s looked so comfortable at the 2026 Players Championship. With three rounds in the books, the native of Sweden is alone in the lead at golf’s “fifth major.”
The 26-year-old didn’t have as strong a round as he did in nearly setting the course record at TPC Sawgrass in Round 2, but he did enough to put himself at 13 under par going into the final round. Åberg holds a three-stroke lead over Michael Thorbjornsen, who continued his strong play from the second round with a 5-under 67 on Saturday.

Xander Schauffele and Cameron Young hope to make a play for the victory on Sunday. Schauffele went from the final pairing in Round 3 into a crowd tied for fourth at 8 under with Justin Thomas, Matt Fitzpatrick, Viktor Hovland, Corey Conners and Brian Harman. Robert MacIntyre and Sahith Theegala used stellar rounds to move into a tie for 10th alongside Jacob Bridgeman, Sepp Straka and Austin Smotherman six behind the leader.

Players Championship odds
Here are the golfers with the best odds to win the tournament, according to BetMGM.
Where is The Players Championship located?
The Players Championship is held at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, about 25 miles southeast of Jacksonville. The Stadium Course was built in 1980, designed by PGA Tour Commissioner Deane Beman and Pete Dye. The par-72 course totaling 6,847 yards features one of the most famous holes in golf: the “Island Green,” the par-3 17th that sees precision and water shots in equal measure.
Who won the 2025 Players Championship?
Rory McIlroy beat J.J. Spaun in a playoff held Monday after both finished 12 under par in the final round of the 2025 Players Championship. McIlroy birdied the first playoff hole and all but wrapped up the title when Spaun hit into the water on the 17th. It was McIlroy’s second Players Championship victory, and he would go on to win his first Masters title the following month.
