The Chargers enter the offseason with a clear mandate: rebuild and fortify the interior offensive line, which was derailed by lackluster play this past season.
That is why Pro Football Focus believes that should be their No. 1 goal in the 2026 NFL Draft, and they can establish that by drafting Penn State guard Olaivavega Ioane with the No. 22 overall pick, tabbing this as the “best case scenario.”
A safe bet to be a quality starting-caliber guard in the NFL, the Chargers would be on the short list for best offensive lines in the NFL for years to come with Ioane in the mix. He would give new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel another tool at his disposal as he looks to unleash the Chargers offense in 2026.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and 320 pounds, Ioane didn’t allow a single sack over his final two colleigate seasons, showcasing elite pass protection that earned him an 87.0 PFF pass-blocking grade and a 78.6 run-blocking mark in his final year at Penn State.
This would be a move that not only protects quarterback Justin Herbert but also empowers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel to unleash his dynamic offense, which blends run-game efficiency with explosive passing plays.
There will be a few teams seeking a guard before the Bolts are on the clock, including the Ravens at No. 14 overall. So there’s a chance that Ioane could be off the board by then. But if he’s still available, the card should quickly be run up to the podium.
