Another week week of college football and another USA TODAY Sports US LBM Coaches Poll, but this week had a major shakeup in the top of the rankings after the Big Ten’s Week 5 performances.
Since the start of the season, the top two teams were the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Penn State Nittany Lions. After a double-overtime loss to the Oregon Ducks, the Nittany Lions fall down-to-earth with the three other Big Ten teams out of the Top five.
Now, the Ducks are ranked No. 2 and the Nittany Lions dropped four ranks to No. 6. The Indiana Hoosiers also are in the Top 10 as the No. 9 ranking after their narrow win against the Iowa Buckeyes.
The Michigan Wolverines were on a bye week this week, but apparently they couldn’t escape scrutiny as they fell two ranks to the No. 20 rank.
The Illinois Fighting Illini moved up a rank to No. 22 after their drastic fall from grace last week, due to their 73-0 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers.
Last week, the USC Trojans made their first appearance on the USA TODAY Sports US LBM Coaches Poll at No. 22, but their loss to Illinois appeared to knock them out of the Top 25.
The Trojans still received votes along with four other Big Ten teams. The Trojans and Maryland had 17 votes, Washington had seven votes, Nebraska had four votes and Iowa had three votes.
