UCLA's Megan Grant dances to celebrate first collegiate basket against North Carolina

For some people, playing one Division I sport isn’t enough. After UCLA Bruin Megan Grant earned her spot on the D1 Softball All-America Team, Grant decided to join the Bruins’ basketball team. On Thursday Grant scored her first points of the season.

Grant gathered an offensive rebound late in UCLA’s win on Thursday over North Carolina and faded away for a layup to cap the scoring in a 78-60 Bruin win. Not only did the UCLA bench erupt for Grant’s basket, Grant gave them something to go crazy for by dancing back at the Bruin bench. Apparently the dance was just Grant keeping her word to her teammates.

“I am so excited for her. She’s amazing. We love her. We’ve been talking about this for so long. It’s a TikTok dance. She said she was going to do it so she kept her word,” Lauren Betts said on ESPN2 after the game about Grant’s basket.

While Grant will likely only be used in mop-up roles for UCLA basketball, it’s hard to overstate her talent on the softball diamond. Grant batted .376 with 26 home runs and 81 runs batted in. Grant struck out only nine times at the plate in 165 at bats last season.

Grant is not the only player at UCLA to play for both the softball and basketball team, teammate Gabriela Jaquez did the same, joining the 2024 UCLA softball team as a pinch runner.

While her true calling is softball, Grant had a chance to join a team searching for a national championship in her first season of college basketball and it looks like she’s enjoying it.
