Another ice cold start to a game doomed the UCLA Bruins on Saturday. UCLA lost 30-23 to UNLV to sink the Bruins to 0-2, destroying any hope built up in the offseason. Now UCLA has a short week ahead before it hosts New Mexico on Friday.
“I’m just frustrated because when you know that you can execute better than we were. Put together two halves like I wish we would have done, the outcome would have been different,” UCLA’s head coach DeShaun Foster said. “Just didn’t make enough plays. They (UNLV) played a good game.”
UCLA outscored UNLV 20-7 after halftime but the Bruins played an ugly first half for the second week in a row, getting behind 23-0 before putting a field goal on the scoreboard just before halftime. UCLA also didn’t show an ounce of discipline, getting called for 14 penalties that resulted in 129 yards, shooting themselves in the foot time after time.
“Just being undisciplined,” Foster said of the Bruins’ penalties. “There’s all types of stuff that can happen out there but you got to maintain your composure, it’s football.”
This level of play isn’t sustainable for the Bruins’ coaching staff, with level of concern rising with inside and outside the program with another soulless loss. The offense was unable to get anything going until UCLA was down three scores and the Bruins’ defense couldn’t get off the field, with UNLV’s offense going 6-11 on third and fourth downs.
It’s unclear what the future of the program will look like but it’s in dire need of some change after another lifeless performance to begin the season.
