Authorities on Saturday were investigating two deadly overnight crashes along Highway 138 in the neighboring communities of Piñon Hills and Phelan.
The first collision was reported about 8:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, on Highway 138 at Mountain Road in Piñon Hills, according to California Highway Patrol logs.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP and San Bernardino County coroner’s records.
No further details regarding the circumstances of the wreck were available.
The second collision took place about 3 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Highway 138 and Highway 2 in Phelan, just under 6 miles east of the Piñon Hills crash site, according to CHP logs.
Initial reports indicated that one vehicle went over a guardrail and overturned, trapping a person inside.
One victim died following the crash, records show.
A medical transport helicopter was landed nearby, although it was not clear how many other people were injured in the wreck.
The cause and circumstances of both crashes were being investigated by the CHP. No further details were available.
