Stockton-area sports roundup, Feb. 2-7: League titles clinched, races tighten

Call it a digest. Call it a highlight reel. Either way, it’s the fastest way to keep up with San Joaquin County sports without following every score or reading every recap.

For some teams, the celebration began between Feb. 2-7. League titles were clinched, droughts were snapped and banners secured.

For others, the reality hit just as fast — the race is far from finished.

With the final week of the regular season ahead in boys and girls basketball, some league titles are locked up, while others remain undecided and could come down to head-to-head matchups or outside help. Meanwhile, most boys and girls soccer champions have already been crowned, with every title decided this week marking the end of a drought, big or small.

That said, welcome to the Feb. 2-7 roundup.

Boys Basketball

Modesto Christian 57, Lincoln 56 (Feb. 4)

Lincoln boys basketball’s skid against Modesto Christian continued in a one-point loss, the Trojans’ 16th defeat in the past 18 meetings.

Lodi 57, St. Mary’s 54 (Feb. 5)

The run finally met resistance. St. Mary’s entered riding four straight wins, including victories over SJAA second-place Lincoln and third-place Tracy. Lodi erased a 25-14 halftime deficit to complete a season sweep, having also won 65-51 on Jan. 14. Both teams are now even at 5-5 in league play.

East Union 64, Central Catholic 49 (Feb. 6)

Checkmate. East Union answered the moment, keeping its repeat bid alive. Sitting at 7-3 and tied for second, the final stretch includes matchups with Oakdale, also 7-3, and first-place Mountain House at 8-2. With Oakdale and Mountain House set to face each other as well, buckle up.

Escalon 61, Ripon Christian 45 (Feb. 6)

Unbeaten no more. Escalon, third in the TVL at 6-4, knocked off Ripon Christian and handed the Knights their first league loss. Even at 9-1 and still in first, the Knights’ worst-case scenario now appears to be a shared league title.

Lincoln 52, San Joaquin Memorial 50 (Feb. 7)

A loss didn’t slow the belief. Three days after falling to Modesto Christian, Lincoln’s Tre Simmons said the game felt like one where the team was “peaking,” and the Trojans backed it up. Lincoln knocked off a top-40 team in California at the Super Saturday Showcase at Delta College, led by Simmons’ 28 points.

Girls Basketball

Liberty Ranch 45, El Dorado 21 (Feb. 3)

Questions are disappearing fast. Another win over the second-place team only reinforced Liberty Ranch’s control, with every league victory still coming by 20 points or more.

Edison 55, McNair 47 (Feb. 3)

Second place was on the line. Edison entered with just one SJAA loss — to Bear Creek — while McNair was unbeaten and rolling with five straight wins. With Bear Creek separating itself, Edison stepped forward and took control.

Central Catholic 59, East Union 48 (Feb. 5)

Title plans remain intact. East Union still controls its path to a sixth consecutive VOL title at 9-1 after splitting the season series with Central Catholic — also 9-1 — thanks to a 62-58 win on Jan. 15. Two games remain, both against teams already beaten comfortably. Perfection, though, has yet to define this championship stretch.

Bear Creek 60, McNair 34 (Feb. 5)

Bear Creek girls basketball clinched the No. 1 SJAA seed, routing McNair and winning 12 of its last 13 in its best season in five years. Siannah Rios led Bear Creek with 16 points and four made 3-pointers. Touraya Blakey and Dj Jackson added 12 points apiece.

Boys Soccer

Sierra 2, East Union 2 (Feb. 3)

Did East Union just give away the VOL title? East Union entered tied with Patterson at 9-1, but a draw — combined with a Patterson win — pushed East Union into second. With Sierra now 8-2-1 in third and set to face Patterson on Feb. 10, East Union will be watching closely, needing help to stay in the race.

Merrill West 4, St. Mary’s 1 (Feb. 5)

Outright at last. Merrill West claimed the TCAL championship on its own for the first time since 2011-12, after previously sharing the title with St. Mary’s in 2023-24. Gabe Ortiz, Hugo Haavapuu, Jordan Lujan and Kevin Soto found the net.

Chavez 1, Stagg 0 (Feb. 6)

More than a win, this one closed a chapter. Chavez secured its first SJAA championship since 2011-12, completing an unbeaten league run at 12-0-2.

Girls Soccer

Franklin 0, Tokay 0 (Feb. 3)

The perfect run took a breath, not a hit. Tokay disrupted Franklin’s 12-0 start, but Franklin answered two days later by beating Edison to finish 13-0-1 and claim its first SJAA championship since 2014-15.

Tracy 3, Lincoln 1 (Feb. 4)

Order held. Tracy beat Lincoln again — its second win in the series after a 1-0 result Jan. 16 — to avoid a three-way tie and lock up the TCAL title. The championship marks Tracy’s first since 2021-22. Goals came from Isabella Cordero, Olivia Sams and Eden Fry.
