Looking for comprehensive previews? Look no further. The Record has it covered.
Each week, The Record highlights the top games to watch in San Joaquin County, providing not only dates and times but also in-depth analysis of each matchup.
And it won’t be just one sport. Boys and girls soccer and basketball will be featured every week.
Here are the games to watch in the 209 from Feb. 9–14.
Boys Basketball
Modesto Christian at Weston Ranch, 7:30 p.m., Feb. 9
Could Weston Ranch hold its own in the TCAL? Many believe they could. Others aren’t convinced. Playing Modesto Christian gives that idea a real test. How it looks — and by how much — will shape the conversation afterward.
Oakdale at East Union, 7:30 p.m. Feb. 11
Win, and Oakdale heads into its season finale with a chance to claim its first league title since 1982. A loss keeps East Union’s hopes of repeating alive.
Oakdale at Mountain House, 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13
All of this starts Feb. 11. An East Union win would put its fate in Oakdale’s hands, requiring a Mustangs victory here to create a shared VOL title for the second straight year. If Oakdale wins Feb. 11, a victory here would give Oakdale a share of the league title. Either way, Mountain House still claims at least a share — unless last-place Manteca pulls an upset earlier in the week.
St. Mary’s at Lincoln, 7:30 p.m., Feb. 13
Rivalry losses don’t fade easily. Lincoln hadn’t lost to St. Mary’s since Jan. 20, 2023, before the upset on Jan. 26. The Trojans, however, have answered losses before, routing Tracy by 35 points and pushing Modesto Christian to the final possession. Another chance arrives here, in a matchup that never needs extra stakes.
Sonora at Ripon Christian, 7:30 p.m., Feb. 13
One win finishes it. Ripon Christian can lock up the TVL title outright by beating second-place Sonora. Lose, and the crown gets shared. The margin was thin last time, with Ripon Christian surviving 63-61 on Jan. 23.
Girls Basketball
Bear Creek at St. Mary’s, 7 p.m., Feb. 9
This one draws a line across leagues. The SJAA’s best steps up to face the TCAL’s best, with St. Mary’s also sitting among the top five teams in California. Beating the Rams would be a shock, but Bear Creek, winners of 12 of its last 13, gets a chance to see where it stands on a much bigger stage.
Ripon at Escalon, 7:30 p.m., Feb. 10
Closure comes in familiar form. Escalon finished second last season despite winning two of three games against Ripon, the team that ultimately claimed the title. Now sitting 10-0 with the TVL title already secured, a win over Ripon — already beaten 59-29 on Jan. 19 — would feel like the final word.
Lincoln at St. Mary’s, 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12
Thirty-eight points separated the county’s top two teams on Jan. 27. The rematch raises a simple question: Will it look any different?
Lathrop at Beyer, 7 p.m., Feb. 12
Are the Spartans really about to do this? If The Record posted the odds, a 28-0 finish would sit at 99.9% — but perfection in basketball is never something to take for granted. Lathrop has rolled through the WAC by 20 or more every night. Moments like this don’t come often. Be there.
SJAA Tournament Championship, TBD, Feb. 12
Three days decide everything. The SJAA tournament begins Feb. 10, moves to the semifinals Feb. 11 and ends Feb. 12 with the league champion crowned.
Boys Soccer
Liberty Ranch at Galt, 6:30 p.m., Feb. 10
When Galt fell 2-1 to Liberty Ranch on Jan. 16, an outright SVC title in the finale likely wasn’t on the radar. It is now. A Liberty Ranch tie with Rosemont on Feb. 4 opened the door, giving Galt a chance to win the league outright. Liberty Ranch still holds the edge, needing only a win or a draw to secure at least a share, while Galt must win.
East Union at Manteca, 6:15 p.m., Feb. 10
Rivalry night comes with urgency. East Union needs a win to keep its title hopes alive. Below is why.
Sierra at Patterson, 6:15 p.m., Feb. 10
Last week’s draw between Sierra and East Union reshaped the race. Patterson moved ahead of East Union and now sits alone at 10-1, needing only a tie to guarantee a share of the VOL crown and a win to take it outright. East Union, at 9-1-1, will be watching closely, hoping Sierra, third at 8-2-1, can win or draw.
Girls Soccer
Ripon at Escalon, 3:30 p.m., Feb. 9
Want to witness history? Ripon can secure its seventh straight TVL title right here.
Manteca at Oakdale, 5:15 p.m., Feb. 9
The trophy is already secured. History is not. Oakdale can close VOL play at 12-0 with a win, something the program has never accomplished.
