The man and woman had been walking alongside El Evado Road prior to the crash, officials said. Another man was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee south at an unknown speed.

“For reasons still under investigation, the Jeep crashed into two pedestrians who were walking on the right shoulder of El Evado Road,” according to a CHP statement.

The man who was struck died from his injuries at the scene, authorities said. His identity was yet to be released by San Bernardino County coroner’s officials.

The injured woman was taken to a hospital with major injuries.

“The driver of the Jeep remained on scene and cooperated with law enforcement,” the statement said. “Alcohol or drugs are not suspected to be a factor at this time.”

No further details were available.

Any witnesses, or anyone with information, can reach the CHP’s Victorville Area Office at (760) 241-1186.
