The Palm Springs Police Department said that at around 8:36 a.m., officers responded to reports of a collision between a bicycle and a vehicle near Highway 111 and Tramway Road, near the Desert Highland Gateway Estates neighborhood. The road was closed until shortly before 11 a.m. as police investigated and cleared the scene.

Investigation showed the cyclist had moved into traffic in front of an oncoming vehicle, Capt. Gustavo Araiza said in a news release. After the vehicle struck the cyclist, it was rear-ended by a second vehicle.

Araiza said both drivers remained on scene and were cooperating with investigators.

The cyclist was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, while the drivers and passengers of the vehicles sustained no injuries.
