Hesperia man badly injured, dog killed after being struck by van

A Hesperia man was hospitalized with major injuries, and his dog was killed, after they were struck by a van along Main Street early Tuesday, law enforcement officials said.

The collision took place just before 3:30 a.m. March 3 at Main Street and 5th Avenue, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

A 51-year-old man was walking both his dog and a bicycle north across the roadway when he was hit by an eastbound Chevrolet Express van, authorities said.

“The pedestrian was transported from the scene by emergency personnel and later airlifted to a local hospital due to his injuries,” sheriff’s officials said in a written statement. An update on his condition was not available.

The dog died at the scene, officials said. The driver of the van remained at the scene.

“The cause of this collision remains ongoing and is under investigation,” the statement said.

Any witnesses, or anyone with information, was asked to contact Deputy A. Hawkins or Cpl. LaFond of the Hesperia Police Department at (760) 947-1500. Tips may also be provided anonymously to the WeTip hotline at (844) 909-3096.
