Two more days of practice have passed this week without any sight of Matthew Stafford on the field with the Los Angeles Rams. He was expected to return on Monday but because his back “didn’t feel good enough,” the Rams decided to hold him out. He missed Tuesday’s practice, too.
All eyes are on the Rams quarterback with Week 1 rapidly approaching but there’s no telling when exactly he’ll be back on the field. Adam Schefter of ESPN provided an update of sorts on Tuesday and he admits it could be a problem for Los Angeles despite the team not being worried.
“We are just over three weeks away, he’s 37 years old, it’s a back, backs linger,” Schefter said. “I think it’s problematic but again, I’m just telling you they have not been concerned and they have maintained all along that if there were a game this week, Matthew Stafford would be out there and he would be playing.”
He added some more context on the Rams’ feeling about this situation.
“At some point, there has to be some level of concern that builds up, but it hasn’t yet within the organization,” Schefter said. “They remain quietly and privately confident that he’s going to be ready for the regular-season opener against the Houston Texans.”
Stafford does still have time to get ready for the season but he was also supposed to be back at practice three weeks ago, and here we are still waiting for him to put a helmet on for the first time since minicamp.
The closer we get to Week 1, the more concerning his status for the season becomes. It’s especially worrisome to think about whether he can stay healthy for all 18 weeks and into the playoffs, if the Rams make it.
