2 die in 2-vehicle crash in unincorporated area outside Oxnard

Two people died in a two-vehicle crash in an unincorporated area outside Oxnard Aug. 24.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the El Rio area of Central and Santa Clara avenues shortly after 6 a.m. for a collision between a pickup and sedan, a CHP officials said.

The driver of a BMW was headed westbound on Central Avenue toward the intersection with Santa Clara Avenue, and witnesses told investigators the driver failed to stop at a red light, according to news release from the CHP. The BMW driver struck a Chevrolet pickup traveling southbound on Santa Clara Avenue, CHP officials said.

The truck driver, a 75-year-old man from Piru, and his passenger, a 58-year-old woman also from Piru, died at the scene. The BMW driver, a 19-year-old man from Santa Paula, was transported to Ventura County Medical Center with moderate injuries, CHP officials said.

The Central and Santa Clara avenues intersection and several nearby roads were closed until about 2 p.m. as a result of the crash and the investigation.

The Santa Paula man was later arrested on suspicion of DUI, CHP officials said.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information about the crash is asked to call theVentura-area CHP office at 805-662-2640.
