Mike LaPorte, the long-time city council representative from St. Clair’s second ward and the current mayor pro tem, was arrested Thursday, Aug. 30 and charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, first offense.

The incident took place outside LaPorte’s restaurant on the St. Clair River, The Voyageur.

“Thursday, 10 p.m., he pulled out of the Voyageur and didn’t see an oncoming car and hit it,” said Tim Raker, St. Clair Police Chief.

LaPorte’s vehicle collided with the passenger’s side of the car on M-29, which runs in front of the restaurant.

LaPorte did not pass the field sobriety administered by the responding officers.

“We booked him in the county jail on charges of OWIL, first, a misdemeanor,” said Raker. LaPorte remained locked up until he sobered up. “Being a first offense for him, he’s probably looking at a fine and secretary of state fees.”

A passenger in the vehicle struck by LaPorte claimed to be injured and was transported to Ascension River District Hospital. The person was released and walked to his home in China Township before police could give him a ride.

“My guys told him they’d pick him up, but he walked home,” Raker said.

LaPorte attended the city council’s regular meeting Sept. 5, but did not comment on the incident.

“My attorney said I shouldn’t speak to anyone until the investigation is complete,” said LaPorte from the Voyageur on Sept. 6.
