DUNDEE – For the fourth straight season the Tecumseh Indians can call themselves champions, having captured their fourth straight Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 2 District Championship with a 54-36 win over the Adrian Maples.
What happened?
Tecumseh controlled the pace of play from the opening tip-off, wasting little time taking over the scoreboard. The Indians rode six points from Avery Zajac, five points from Chloe Bullinger, seven points from Reese Grounds, and seven points from Addi Zajac to a dominant 27-8 first quarter advantage.
Adrian was able to slow down the Tecumseh attack in the second quarter as it was the Maples taking the second quarter 8-6, closing the score to 33-16 at the half.
Tecumseh regained control in the third quarter thanks to eight points from Addi Zajac and seven points from Avery Zajac, giving the Indians a 15-9 third quarter advantage, building the Tecumseh lead to 48-25 with one full quarter left to play.
Adrian showed zero quit in the loss, taking the fourth quarter 11-6, however it was far too little too late as Tecumseh went on to take the 54-36 victory.
Top performers
Addi Zajac, Tecumseh – Addi put together a truly dominant performance in the Division 2 district final, pouring in 17 points to go along with 19 rebounds in a huge double-double.
Ella Salenbien, Adrian – Salenbien led the Adrian effort with a big double-double to cap off a stellar career, scoring 14 points to go along with 14 rebounds in the tough loss.
Avery Zajac, Tecumseh – Avery Zajac led all scorers in the win with 20 points to go along with nine rebounds
Tatum Borton, Adrian – Borton was second on the team with seven points to go along with six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Also adding to the Tecumseh winning effort was Reese Grounds with seven points; Chloe Bullinger with six points; and Delaney Brown with four points.
Chipping in for the Adrian effort was Amar Sanchez with seven points; Avery Canales with two points; Chloe Carey with two points and two rebounds; Jalynn Davis with two points and four rebounds; and Rylee Lahring with two points.
What comes next?
With the heartbreaking loss the Adrian Maples finish out their 2025-26 season at 19-6 overall. The Maples will now say goodbye to a solid group of seniors that includes Chloe Carey, Rylee Lahring, Tatum Borton, and Ella Salenbien.
Tecumseh meanwhile improves to 22-2 overall after claiming its fourth straight MHSAA Division 2 District title. The Indians will return to action Monday at 7 p.m. for the MHSAA Division 2 Regional 13 semifinals to be held at Tecumseh High School. The Indians will face off with perennial power Haslett (22-2) which defeated Charlotte 59-24 in its district championship game.
