It’s time to vote for the Detroit Free Press Boys Prep Preseason Quarterback of the Year.
This week’s poll features players from the Free Press’s preview of top quarterbacks for the upcoming MHSAA football season.
Voting will be open until noon Friday, Aug. 1. We’ll announce the winner here shortly after the poll closes.
Here are the nominees (listed in alphabetical order by last name):
Tommy Carr, Saline
Carr, the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, took the starting quarterback position following his brother C.J.’s departure to college. The rising senior threw for more than 2,300 yards and 26 touchdowns and had six rushing touchdowns in his first season with the Hornets. He is committed to Miami (Ohio).
Kayd Coffman, East Kentwood
The Michigan State commit made his debut at East Kentwood last season as a junior after he transferred from Grand Rapids South Christian. In his first season with the Falcons, he threw for nearly 1,600 yards and 12 touchdowns, leading the team to a playoff game for the first time since the 2022-2023 season. But they would come up short against Division 1 runner-up Hudsonville.
Jaxson Dosh, Davison
Dosh became Davison’s starting quarterback last season as a junior and he threw for more than 1,700 yards, rushed for an additional 300 yards with 31 total touchdowns. After losing in the district opener to Oxford, the Western Michigan commit looks to lead to a state championship for the first time since 2019.
Andrew Knight, Detroit King
Another quarterback transfer, Knight will play his final season at Detroit King, departing from Sterling Heights Stevenson. In his final year with the Titans, he threw for 695 yards and rushed for 176 yards, collecting a total six touchdowns.
Jake Morrow, Grand Blanc
The upcoming senior dual-threat quarterback looks to lead the Bobcats deeper into the playoffs, something that has happened since he took the job as starting quarterback in 2023. After making it to the district finals as a sophomore, Morrow led Grand Blanc to the regional round of the 2024 playoffs but lost to Rochester Adams. Last season, he threw for more than 2,400 yards and rushed for almost 800 yards, racking up 34 total touchdowns.
Nate Rocheleau, Harper Woods
Rocheleau has developed quite the resume during his time at Harper Woods. The upcoming fourth-year starter led the Pioneers to the playoffs the past two seasons and finished with a Division 4 state championship in 2023. He made the state semifinals last season, throwing for 2,021 yards and 24 touchdowns in the nine games.
Same Stowe, Notre Dame Pontiac Prep
Stowe led Norte Dame Prep to the school’s first Division 5 state championship as a junior with the Fighting Irish. He finished last season with more than 2,700 yards and 44 touchdowns.
Donald Tabron II, Cass Tech
Tabron led Cass Tech to the school’s first Division 1 football state championship for the first time since 2016 as freshman. In his first season with the Technicians, he threw for 1,656 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Alex Waszczenko, Clarkston
After a player transfer moved Waszczenko up the depth chart, the then sophomore got the nod as the Wolves’ starter. Last season he threw for more than 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns. He also rushed for 231 yards and two touchdowns.
Ryland Watters, Rochester Adams
The 6-feet-2, 220 pound quarterback, nicknamed “Rino,” will lead the Highlanders offense for the third consecutive season. Watters’ running ability along with his passing skills will allow Adams to make a run at the state championship for the first time since 2021.
