Airport’s first state champion in girls wrestling is the Monroe County Athlete of the Week.
Olivia Kemp, a junior who captured the state crown at 190 pounds, drew 3,068 votes to easily top the March 2-8 poll.
She was trailed by a pair of Whiteford basketball players. Boys player Cole Griffin was second with 1,660 votes and girls player Macy Ovall finished third with 1,035.
Jefferson girls basketball player Jaelyn Barath (878) and Erie Mason-Ida swimmer David Mills (564) claimed fourth and fifth place.
There were a total of 7,736 votes cast.
You can now make your choice for the March 9-15 winner. Polls will remain open through 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18.
Here are the credentials for the candidates in alphabetical order.
Kinzi Burmeister, Bedford girls basketball: Netted a career-high 17 points during a win in the regional semifinals.
Olivia Gratz, Airport girls basketball: Scored 22 points in the final and 13 in the semifinal to lead the Jets to the first regional title in school history.
JR Hess, Dundee boys swimming: Captured eighth place in the 50-yard freestyle at the Division 3 state finals with a time of :21.78.
Adela Illes, SMCC girls basketball: Poured in a career-high 27 points during a regional semifinal victory.
Jaeli Jones, Summerfield girls basketball: Closed her great career with 25 points in the regional the Bulldogs hosted.
David Mills, Erie Mason-Ida boys swimming: Set four school records and took a fourth place and three fifths in the Division 3 state finals.
Brenner Nelson, Erie Mason-Ida boys swimming: Placed eighth in the 100-yard freestyle and swam on relays that were fifth and 11th in the Division 3 state finals.
Jace Starll, Gibraltar Carlson boys diving: Dove to sixth place in the Division 2 state finals with a score of 433.95.
Jared Tunison, Erie Mason-Ida boys swimming: Swam on two relays that took fifth place and set school records and was eighth individually in the individual medley at the Division 3 state finals.
