It’s time to vote for the Detroit Free Press Boys Prep Athlete of the Week for May 18-24.
This week’s poll features four players, one from track and field and three from baseball.
Voting will be open until 11:59 a.m. Friday, May 30. We’ll announce the winner here shortly after the poll closes.
Here are this week’s nominees (listed in alphabetical order by last name):
Derek Lesko, Riverview Gabriel Richard, track and field: The junior runner ran a personal record 22.38-second 200 meter dash at the Division 4 Michigan Interscholastic Track and Field Coaches Association team state meet at Hillsdale Academy. He also took part in the 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams that finished first to help Riverview Gabriel Richard finish first as a team and set the meet record in the 4×200. Lesko will participate in four events in the Division 4 state championship meet on May 31.
Luke Nelson, Walled Lake Central baseball: Nelson, a senior, went seven hits in 10 at-bats in a doubleheader against Birmingham Groves and Birmingham Seaholm on May 24. He went 5-of-7 with six stolen bases in a 6-3 win over Groves in an 18-inning marathon, followed by going 2-of-3 in a 8-3 win over Seaholm.
Kyle Terry, Detroit Cass Tech baseball: Terry, a senior, started as the pitcher for Cass Tech in the Detroit Public School League championship on May 19 against Detroit Western at Comerica Park. Terry gave up one run on one hit in 5⅔ innings to help lead Cass Tech to a 6-1 win over Western and secure the city league championship for the school for the first time in two decades. Western had won 15 straight city championships.
Ryland Watters, Rochester Adams baseball: Watters, a junior, pitched 6⅓ innings with one run allowed on five hits with nine strikeouts while hitting the game-winning two-run home run in a 2-1 win over Rochester Hills Stoney Creek in the first round of district playoffs on May 22.
