WATERFORD — The MHSAA state bowling finals were completed this past weekend
Three Rivers’ Jayna Larson competed in her third straight finals as an individual for the Wildcats. She finished second overall in the Division 2 tournament this year.
Flint Kearsley’s Noel Bunch won the D2 individual title, beating Larson 419-368 in the finals. Larson led 197-195 after one game in the finals, but Bunch was able to put together a 224-171 win in the second contest to pick up the total pin win.
Larson qualified second overall after six individual games to begin the tournament. She made her way to the finals with wins over Julia Sovinski of Dearborn Divine Child (425-364), Delany Vanier of Flint Kearsley (362-306) and Chelsie Voss of Bay City John Glenn (424-353).
Sturgis’ Khara Kimes finished 17th at the finals. She missed the knockout stages by just a single pin, finishing with 1,059 total pins. Kimes’ overall finish was third-best individually in Sturgis history. Miley Holden totaled 960 pins to finish 36th overall. For the Trojan boys, Josh Groff totaled 1,072 pins to finish 38th.
Three Rivers’ Ashton Lahman finished 30th with 1,121 pins. Tyce Wilds placed 43rd (1,037) and Nick Allen finished 47th with at 1,013 pins.
Bronson’s Clayton Shortridge finished his season in the knockout stages. He qualified 15th overall with 1,205 pins and matched up with second-seeded Alex Bissett of Flint Powers Catholic. Shortridge won that matchup 385-368 before falling to Michael Fitzner of Olivet 409-397 in the next round.
Drew McConn finished 21st (1,178).
Audrey Shiery qualified sixth overall for the Bronson girls. She was upended in the first round of knockouts by Marielle Schafran of Grass Lake 369-284.
In the team finals, the Three Rivers boys lost in the first round of match play. The Cats were knocked out by Flint Kearsley in four games. Kearsley marched on to win the Division 2 state title. The Three Rivers girls finished 11th.
Bronson made its way to the semifinals in Division 3. The Vikings qualified second overall with 3,366 total pins knocked over in qualifying. In the first round of knockouts, Bronson edged Olivet 3.5 – 2.5, winning the tiebreaker 182-167. Bronson then dropped a three-game match to Durand in the semis to have its season ended.
The Division 1 boys title was won by Dearborn, Kearlsey won the D2 title. Durand went on to win the D3 title, Blissfield won the D4 championship.
The Division 2 girls title was won by Caledonia. Kearsley won the D2 title while Milan grabbed the D3 title. Winning D4 was Ravenna.
