Based on the classic S.E. Hinton novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s star-studded film, “The Outsiders” gets the stage musical treatment. ‘The Sound of Music’ at Fox Theatre

This Rodgers & Hammerstein classic comes to the stage of the Fox Theatre this weekend with all the songs you can’t help but sing along to. ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ Birmingham Village Players

Based on the story of a 13-year-old girl who spent two years hiding from the Nazis during World War II, this production stars Josephine O’Reilly, a young actress from Grosse Pointe. Her sister Margot is played by Stella Fenton of Beverly Hills, and their parents are played by local actors Caryn Gach of Pleasant Ridge and Joshua Harney, a speech and drama teacher from Grand Blanc. 7:30 p.m. Thurs.-Fri. Classical Roots at Orchestra Hall

This year’s two-hour “Classical Roots” concert features “Troubled Water” for trombone and orchestra by Carlos Simon, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by John Rosamond Johnson and more. ‘Feeder’ at the Gallery

This group exhibition features works by three Detroit artists. They are musician and visual artist Stacey MacLeod, sculptor and art educator Megan DeShields and Sarah Cavalieri, a sculptor who is also the visual art curator for the Michigan Glass Project. ‘The Vagina Monologues’ at Emerald Theatre

An annual event put on by Macomb County nonprofit Turning Point, which helps empower survivors of domestic violence and other abuses, “The Vagina Monologues” play is back for a one-night performance. “The reception to The Vagina Monologues has been overwhelmingly positive year after year, which is why we continue to bring it back,” said president and CEO of Turning Point Sharman Davenport, Ph.D., in a media alert. “Although the topics covered in the play are raw and real, there are also moments of lightheartedness that entertain the audience while also educating on the realities of domestic and sexual violence.” Doors open at 6 p.m. Fri. with performance at 7 p.m. Fri. $40, $200 for a four-seat opera box, $280 for a table of eight. 31 N. ‘How Romantique’ at Planet Ant

Spoofing the Hallmark movie formula, this original production follows a top businesswoman as she has to go home to her small, northern Michigan town. “The big arc of the show is Emily’s journey of figuring out how to be a better person … maybe she’s in town to lay low because she liquefied a child with a tech product,” said the comedic stage show’s co-writer, director and cast member Mike McGettigan. 8 p.m. Fri.-Sat. and 3 p.m. Sun. ‘Next to Normal’ at Players Guild of Dearborn

An emotional and musical production, “Next to Normal” tackles the topics of mental health, loss, family and everyday life. “I think that this show tackles the theme of mental health in a way that really surprises an audience,” said director Cayka Kolbusz in a press release. “You’ll find yourself laughing and having fun, and then experiencing an emotional gut punch that a dramatic show can do.” 8 p.m. Fri.-Sat. and 2 p.m. Sun.
