Roundup of Monroe County Region sports for Jan. 22-24

MILAN ― Trey Oldenburg won the battle, and his team won the war.

Oldenburg won the individual battle with a game-high 28 points to 20 for Talladay. And Jefferson posted a 66-46 victory.

Oldenburg is closing in on the school record of 1,185 points held by Jackson Barath.

“Trey played little injured earlier this year with a bad ankle,” said Jefferson coach Corey Wiley. “He has really turned it back on lately. Everyone has. We have a lot of nice pieces and the kids enjoy playing together.”

One of the biggest differences in the game is that Oldenburg got more help from his teammates than Talladay.

Hunter Barton hit a trio of 3-pointers and scored 11 points and Luke Beaudrie added 10.

Barton also played solid defense against Talladay.

“Talladay is a really nice player,” Wiley said. “You look around the county and he’s in the top seven or eight for sure. He hit some nice, tough shots tonight. He has good footwork and plays well.”

Wiley says defense has been the key for Jefferson winning four in a row to improve to 10-4.

“Nice team win on the road tonight,” Jefferson coach Corey Wiley said. “Our defense continues to lead the way.”

Jefferson, which started playing basketball in 1961, has hit double figures for wins only seven times in school history. The school record for wins is 14.

Milan dipped to 3-11.
