From white to wheat to sourdough to rye and beyond, there are plenty of loaves to choose from, and plenty to love.
Hillsdale County is home to several artisan bakers serving up classic and specialty loaves, but what’s the very best dough for your dough?
This week, we asked the community to nominate their favorite local breadmakers and compiled the results into a poll.
Hillsdale’s “Hometown Hotspot” Market House won the poll with 38.1% of the vote. The Market House Supermarket brags about doing things the “old fashion way,” baking pastries, cakes, cookies and their famous dinner rolls from scratch for over 75 years.
Artisan bakery Hillsdale Hearth came in second place, earning 28.57% of the vote. Hillsdale Hearth is inspired by European bakeries, and takes orders for various breads online weekly. Learn more at hillsdalehearth.com/current-bread.
St. Joe’s Cafe, a newly established pizzeria in downtown Hillsdale, tied for third place this week with DoughNation Bakery, each receiving 14.29% of the vote. St. Joe’s Cafe is a vendor at the Hillsdale Farmers Market, with a focus on sourdough breads. DoughNation Bakery was born during the COVID-19 pandemic, when one man’s passion turned into a business.
The Goblin Cottage, a small family homestead in Mosherville with family-made baked goods and farm-fresh eggs also received votes this week, earning 4.76%.
