Portland's Bradley Meyers on mission to stay dominant in quest for state title

Bradley Meyers earned all-state honors last winter for the Portland wrestling team.

But taking fourth at 175 pounds in Division 3 wasn’t what he had hoped for.

So Meyers made it a point to make his senior season memorable on the mat.

And Meyers has succeeded in that quest so far as he continues to push toward his top goal of winning a state championship at 190 pounds in Division 2.

“I really have been giving every match what I got,” said Meyers, who was voted the LSJ boys high school athlete of week winner. “I’m just trying to stay dominant and beat people better than I beat them before or beat them by as much as I can every time. Being the aggressor this whole season is kind of how I’ve been thinking about it.”

That approach has led the way in a dominant season for Meyers, who enters the individual regional tournament Feb. 21 with a 47-0 record. He’s recorded 29 wins by fall and that included getting a pair of pins at the Division 2 team regional Feb. 18.

Meyers has always put in a lot of time on the mat but increased his wrestling activity in the offseason. He believes that has played a role in his strong season.

“This year I think I stepped it up by doing quite a few tournaments and going to practices and things like that,” Meyers said.

As part of his strong senior season, Meyers surpassed 150 career wins earlier this month. But he remains focused on giving all he’s got to achieve his ultimate goal of becoming a state champion.

“I’m happy I got there (to 150 wins) but it’s just one more benchmark along the way of me getting to that state championship,” Meyers said. “It’s like a bonus.”
