Officials said they believe the missing driver is Nicholas Popp, a 32-year-old township resident.

Anyone with information about the incident or the driver’s whereabouts should call Chesterfield Township Police at (586) 949-2322.

Police were called at about 11:06 p.m. Monday to a field near 25 Mile and New Haven roads for a report of a vehicle fire, according to authorities.

Officers arrived and found a vehicle engulfed in flames, officials said.

Police investigated and found a trail of blood leading away from the vehicle to the northeast, indicating the driver had possibly left the scene on foot, investigators said.

Evidence collected at the scene suggests the driver suffered significant injuries during the crash, according to police.

Authorities searched for Popp in the surrounding area with canine units and drones. After firefighters extinguished the vehicle, they helped in the search on off-road utility vehicles, police said.

Detectives said they learned the missing driver had made suicidal statements earlier in the day.
