Monroe County Region varsity sports roundup for Jan. 21

NEWPORT – It’s been a challenging start to the season for Airport’s competitive cheerleading team.

“We had two big injuries,” coach Emily Dusik said. “It was a rough December with that and flu and illness.”

Dusik struggled to figure out a lineup at times.

But, through it all, the Jets kept winning.

Now, Airport is on track to repeat as Huron League champions after winning a league jamboree at Jefferson on Wednesday, Jan. 21.

“We’ve just rolled with the changes,” Dusik said.

The Jets finished with 771.04 points Wednesday, including 314.1 in the third round.

Grosse Ile was second with 759.78 followed by Flat Rock with 728.92, Riverview with 717.18, New Boston Huron with 708.78 and Jefferson with 684.56.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Whiteford streak ends

OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford’s three-game winning streak came to an end with a 40-30 loss to Maumee Valley Wednesday.

“Today’s game was a good learning moment for our team,” Whiteford coach Nick Kopp said. “We had a little bit of a high coming into this game with a three-game winning streak and I think we underestimated them! Maumee out-hustled us on too many loose balls and was the more aggressive team.”
