WARREN — It was fitting that the Jets were crowned as Top Gun.
Airport wrestling team went 4-0 and won the Most Valuable Wrestler awards for both the upper and lower weights in winning the Warren DeLaSalle Top Gun Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 10.
“It was definitely our best weekend all season,” Airport coach Jon Morris said. “We had a lot of kids go 4-0 and 3-1. It was a good team tournament. I was happy with our performance and the fight the kids showed.”
The Jets soared over Woodhaven 53-23, Dearborn Heights Annapolis 71-9, Anchor Bay 66-18, and Warren De La Salle 46-32.
Kyle Link (126) won most valuable honors for the lower weights and Holden Otter (215) won the same title for the upper weights.
Link became the second Airport wrestler this season to reach 100 career wins, joining Kenny Wingate.
Otter is on the verge of joining the club. He finished the day with 99 wins in his career.
Also winning all four of their matches were Antonio Ayala (132) and Harrison Sampson (190). Going 3-1 were Manny Rodgers (106), Jayden Smith (113), Egan Kruise (144), Emmett Kruise (150), Roman Day (157) and Dylan Lay (285).
PREP WRESTLING
Ida wears crown
MONROE – Justin Crozier and Braxton Shaffer both went 5-0 to lead Ida to the championship of the St. Mary Catholic Central Tournament Saturday.
“A great day on the mats for the Blue Streaks,” Ida coach Bryan Shaffer said.
Ida beat Riverview Gabriel Richard 84-0, Monroe B 70-12, SMCC 46-29, Blissfield 53-22 and Milan 49-26.
Kaden Gerth was 4-0 and Steven Riley 3-0. Sam Brandjord, Jack Rose, Evan Pugh, Ryan Ashcraft & Sam King were 4-1 for the 10-5 Blue Streaks.
Milan’s Samir Jomaa recorded his 100th career victory.
Dundee’s Cosby reigns
NEW LOTHROP – Blake Cosby was the 157-pound champion to lead Dundee to the championship of the New Lothrop Hall of Fame Tournament Saturday.
Cosby never made it into the third period. He had pins in :36, 1:20 and 1:19 and technical fall in 2:58.
Avery Lane (175), Blake Hensen (106), Jesse Wertenberger (132) and Ryan Williams (113) were second, Bryan Sterling (126) third and Owen Motylinski (190) fourth.
Huron dominates tourney
LAPEER – Caleb Frazier (106), Cayden Banko (138) and Daniel Gemmel (126) won championships as New Boston Huron dominated the Lapeer Battle for the Bolt Saturday.
The Chiefs scored 221 points – 62 better than runner-up Lapeer.
Braydon Hall (144) and Finnegan Grube (215) were third and Nathan Matsos (150), Josh Hubbard (157) and Jason Downs (132) fourth.
Three Bears win titles
LINCOLN PARK – Cody O’Hern (106), Sawyer Schaffer (126) and Karson Petit (150) won championships as Jefferson placed third in the Lincoln Park Orange & Blue Invitational Saturday.
Dino (106) pinned the No. 1 seed and took second place.
Austin Davis (120) and Beau Childress (190) placed fourth.
Colin Booms (165) and Andrew Marama (120) were third for Flat Rock.
VanEeckhoutte a champ
NAPOLEON – Danny VanEeckhoutte took the 126-pound title for Erie Mason at the Napoleon Invitational.
Teammate Trent Zdanowski (175) was a runner-up.
Carlson goes 3-2
FOWLERVILLE – Gibraltar Carlson finished 3-2 at the Fowlerville Duals Saturday.
The Marauders beat Lake Orion 48-24, Lansing Waverly 54-21 and Mattawan 51-27 and fell to Yale 41-35 and Lakewood 42-38.
Luke Guffey (165) and Abram McCall (106) each had four pins for Carlson and Gunnar Adams (175) finished with three. Guffey and McCall each won all five of their matches along with Matthew Beach (285). Jalian Harris (215) finished 4-1.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
SMCC clips Monroe
MONROE – Adela Illes scored 18 points and Bella LaFountain 14 to lead St. Mary Catholic Central to a 54-41 victory over Monroe Saturday night.
“Fun game against Monroe tonight,” SMCC coach Brian Boberg said. “They played really hard from the tip top to the end. Proud of our girls showing improvement on execution. Bella Lafountian continues to show excellent leadership running our offense and with her defensive intensity.”
Alexa Turner and Gracelyn Carter also played well for the 3-4 Kestrels.
Jennah Cadle scored 16 points for Monroe (2-7).
May gives Bedford a lift
TEMPERANCE – Sienna May scored a season-high 14 points to lead Bedford to a 47-33 victory over Toledo Rogers Saturday.
Anna Gray led the way with 21 points as Bedford improved to 4-3.
Airport drops first game
CARLETON – Airport suffered its first loss after six wins to open the season, falling 60-51 to Whitmer Saturday.
Sophia Mator led Airport with 17 points.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Bedford stumbles
TEMPERANCE – Toledo Rogers scored the first 16 points of the game and held off Bedford 64-56 Saturday.
“The quick turnaround from playing the night before really took a toll on us,” Bedford coach Nick Brillhart said. “We were able to settle in and make some adjustments in the second half. Three times we were able to cut it to single digits in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t dig completely out of the hole we dug in the first few minutes.”
Corbin Miller led the 6-6 Mules with 21 points and Payton Sheaves added 15.
PREP SWIMMING
Zukovskis leads Milan
HOLLAND – Milan’s Tadas Zukovskis placed eighth in the backstroke and ninth in the butterfly at the D3 Invitational Saturday.
He hit a state-qualifying time in the fly and hit a Michigan Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association standard in the back.
Caleb Furlong placed 14th in diving, Jameson McShane was 14th in the individual medley and 21st in the butterfly and Alec Markham took 20th in the 100 freestyle.
“As we continue to develop, the boys swam some new races for some of them and excelled,” Milan coach Dan Heikka said. “We have the largest team we have had in years, and lots of new athletes. The meet allowed us to try some new combinations and new events.”
