One person was in critical condition on Friday, July 11, after being shot by Michigan State Police troopers following a traffic stop and pursuit on M-115 in Wexford and Osceola counties on Thursday night.
The suspect was in critical condition as of 5:30 a.m. Friday, the Michigan State Police said in a post on X.
In a Friday afternoon update, the MSP said the subject involved, a 27-year-old man from Marion, remains in the hospital and no additional information was being released at this time.
The troopers from the Cadillac post were assisting Wexford County deputies during a traffic stop about 8:13 p.m. Thursday. Deputies were seeking the man who was involved in a previous assault and was believed to be armed, MSP Sixth District said in the post.
“The subject fled the traffic stop, initiating a pursuit,” MSP said. “During the pursuit, the suspect began firing from his vehicle at deputies while traveling southeast on M-115. The suspect lost control near 20 Mile Road in Osceola County (southeast of Cadillac), crashed into a ditch, and fled on foot.”
Wexford County Sheriff’s Office officials did not immediately respond to emails seeking additional information about the suspect or previous incident.
Troopers caught up with the man and “gave verbal commands” to drop the weapon, the post said.
“It is believed the subject pointed a firearm at the troopers, at which time he was shot,” MSP said in the post.
Troopers rendered aid, the post said, and the man was transported to an unspecified hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. No law enforcement officers were injured, MSP said.
Neither MSP nor Wexford County provided information on the individual’s identity. They did not say what charges the person may face.
The Michigan State Police Special Investigation Section is investigating the incident.
