Shawn Clemens, a 2nd‑grade teacher at Colon Elementary School in Colon, Michigan, has been selected as the Sturgis Journal Amazing Teacher for the month, presented by John B. Simpson Co. and LL Electric.
Krystal Crawford nominated Clemens, praising her dedication, warmth, and tireless commitment to her students’ growth.
“Shawn truly goes above and beyond for her students every single day. She is caring, loving, and dedicated to helping every student succeed. No matter what challenges come her way, she always puts her students first and finds ways to support them — both academically and emotionally. Her kindness and patience create a positive and welcoming environment where every student feels valued and cared for. Shawn’s commitment and heart make a lasting difference in the lives of her students and everyone around her.”
Clemens has been teaching for 26 years, spending the last six years in 2nd grade. She describes teaching not simply as a job, but as her life’s purpose.
“I feel humbled to be nominated as an Amazing Teacher because teaching is my life and I love what I do.”
Inspired by her own 4th-grade teacher, Ms. Nelson, Clemens says one of her favorite parts of the job is seeing students return year after year “to give hugs and say hello.”
She also wrote that while teaching is often a tough job, “with a lot of heartbreak,” if you love what you do, “you can deal with anything that your career throws at you.”

Colon Elementary School, part of Colon Community School District, is located in Colon, Michigan. The public school serves students in grades K–8 and has an enrollment of approximately 254 students.
