Mackinac Island’s Grand Hotel named one of nation’s best destination resorts

Mackinac Island’s famed Grand Hotel has reeled in another accolade. It has been named among the 10 best destination resorts in a new USA Today ranking.

USA Today describes the hotel as a summer resort that “predates the automobile boom.”

“You won’t find any cars on Mackinac Island, as horse-drawn carriages are the primary mode of transportation,” the story states. “Individually designed accommodations at the Grand Hotel include guest rooms and expansive suites, and activity offerings are abundant. The Victorian-era hotel also claims the world’s longest porch.”

The Grand Hotel ranked number seven on the list, and is the only Michigan hotel represented.

The Grand Hotel has been open since 1887. The hotel keeps old-fashioned tradition alive with afternoon tea, nightly dancing as a live orchestra plays and rocking chairs lining its record-breaking porch.

It also featured heavily in the beloved 1980 film “Somewhere in Time” starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. In October, the hotel will welcome guests for its Somewhere in Time Weekend. This year marks not only the 35th anniversary of the popular theme weekend, it’s also the 45th anniversary of the movie and the 50th anniversary of the novel the movie was based on, “Bid Time Return.”
