Lions special teams coordinator Dave Fipp walks himself into a meme

Lions special teams coordinator Dave Fipp is known for his free-flowing press conference answers. You never really know where the engaging Fipp will drive the presser.

Sometimes it’s a very precise breakdown of the nuances of blocking a gunner on a punt return. Others, it’s a thoughtful response about the merits of long-distance field goal accuracy versus midrange kicks. He once gave a 7-minute filibuster on solving the Lions revolving door at kicker in the pre-Jake Bates days. Fipp might even enthusiastically discuss flying with the Blue Angels.

In his presser ahead of the Lions Week 6 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs, Fipp turned in the direction of a popular meme with the high school crowd.

Fipp was talking about a high kick that “goes 26, 7 yards down the field” and caught himself in a meme. “6,7,” Fipp chuckled.

For the uninitiated, “6,7” is a wildly popular expression with teens and in youthful pop culture slang. It appears to have many meanings; my own 17-year-old daughter has given me three distinctly different origins and meanings for it, none of which make sense. But it’s a very real thing for the kids these days, as Fipp knows well.

“It’s the funniest thing,” Fipp said through a broad smile. “The truth is, I only laugh because my son, number one, makes the whole thing a big deal. There’s all these things that are a big deal to these young kids. And so I’m like, ‘what is 6,7?’ and he’s like, ‘it’s a meme. ‘ And I’m like, “What’s a meme?”

Add it to the ever-growing list of Dave Fipp press conference highlights.
