Halloween is a few weeks away and families are stocking up on candy to welcome trick-or-treaters, but which candy are they buying most often?
Recent studies from food delivery companies DoorDash and Instacart show Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are the top choice nationally.
In Michigan, though, Instacart and DoorDash say Twizzlers, the red licorice, is the state’s top candy purchased by Instacart shoppers.
Here’s a closer look at Halloween candy shopping in the mitten state.
What is Michigan’s unique favorite candy?
Though Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups took home the national title, each state has its own candy quirks, too. Twizzlers was the fan favorite in Michigan, according to Instacart and DoorDash.
“Fueling the licorice rivalry, we uncovered what states pledge allegiance to Twizzler vs. Red Vines,” DoorDash said. “The Northeast and Midwest including Illinois, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio all stand firmly on Team Twizzlers while out West, Red Vines rule in Arizona, Idaho and Montana.”
What are Twizzlers?
Twizzlers were created in 1927 at a factory in Brooklyn, New York. In 1977, production moved to the Young & Smylie Confectionary Company factory when The Hershey Company acquired Twizzlers Twists, introducing an array of new flavors for candy enthusiasts to enjoy.
The candy features length of red licorice with a hollow center. The candy comes in cherry, strawberry, black licorice, watermelon, chocolate, sweet and sour, and numerous other flavors.
How much does Michigan like candy?
Michigan ranked slightly higher than the national average for candy sales, with Michigan Instacart shoppers buying candy 6% more often than the average, according to Instacart.
How does Michigan feel about candy corn?
The classic Halloween symbol is also great at dividing the masses.
Michigan sat right in the middle for candy corn orders among Instacart shoppers, buying the national average amount of the holiday treat, according to Instacart.
How much do Americans spend on candy each year?
According to the National Confectioners Association, Americans spend about $54 billion in retail candy purchases each year.
