Michigan State hockey will play for a Big Ten championship on Thursday night in the Twin Cities.
The Spartans head to Minnesota with a chance to clinch a third straight Big Ten championship this weekend, starting with Thursday night’s matchup against the Golden Gophers. Michigan State trails rival Michigan by two points in the Big Ten standings, with the Wolverines’ regular season wrapped up and no more games left. This means, the Spartans can win a share of the championship with an overtime/shootout win or win the title outright with a regulation win over Minnesota on Thursday.
Michigan State comes into this series off arguably its worst weekend of hockey last week. The Spartans went 0-1-1 against Ohio State last week, and because of that dropped from the top spot in the NPI rankings. Michigan State is 24-7-1 overall and 15-6-1 in Big Ten play this season.
Minnesota is set to wrap up a disappointing regular season this weekend, with the Golden Gophers set to miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time in six years. Minnesota is 11-20-2 overall and 7-14-1 in Big Ten play, and will require winning the Big Ten Tournament in order to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
Michigan State picked up a pair of wins to sweep the first series between these two teams at Munn Ice Arena in late January.
