Hartland will defend its state gymnastics championship coming off a regional performance in which it posted the highest score in Michigan.
The Eagles scored 147.75 points to win the regional meet at East Lansing. The Brighton/Howell co-coop team finished second with 140.975 to also qualify for the state meet, which will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, March 6 at Milford High School.
The other winning regional scores in Michigan were 146.275 by Rockford, 143.5 by Farmington and 141.575 by Northville.
Hartland beat Rockford to win its first state championship since 1999 last year, 148.575 to 146.525. Rockford had won the previous three state titles.

Hartland has won four straight regional championships and five in the past seven years. The Eagles’ winning score this season was its second-highest total during that span behind only a 149.175 last year.
Alexis Fundich of Hartland was first all around among Division 1 competitors for the second year in a row with a score of 37.95. Fundich won floor exercise with a school-record score of 9.825. She also won bars with a 9.675, tied teammate Olivia Flatt for first on beam with a 9.5 and was third on vault with an 8.95.
Hartland had the top three all-around finishers, with Kate Gostlin taking second with a 36.6 and Flatt third with a 36.375. Gostlin won vault with a 9.8.
Pinckney’s Emily Clark was fourth all around with a 35.6, while Howell’s Zoe Cerda was fifth with a 34.975.
The top six all-around gymnasts and the top eight in each event qualify for the individual state competition at noon Saturday, March 7 at Milford.

Mariah Kirby had nine points, while Izzy Cox and Michaela Gulledge each had eight for Fowlerville in a first-round district game.
Hartland 42, Brighton 38
Hartland sophomore Brinley Neuer scored six of her 15 points in the fourth quarter, as the Eagles came back from a 29-27 deficit after three quarters in a first-round district game.
Addison Trammel had 10 points and Jill Smilowski nine for Hartland. Gracyn Houck had nine points for Brighton.
