Gaylord High School students place third in ProStart culinary contest

The team from Gaylord High School placed third in the culinary category during the Michigan ProStart Invitational March 2-3. 

According to a Michigan Hospitality Foundation announcement, more than 500 high school competitors, representing 30 schools from across the state, took part in the event in Battle Creek.

The students demonstrated their skills in six categories, including Management, Culinary, Knife Cuts, Tabletop Design, Pasta and ServSafe Quiz Bowl.

“The competition reflects the realities of a fast-paced career in the hospitality industry,” said Amanda Smith, executive director of the Michigan Hospitality Foundation, in the announcement. “From developing a three-course meal to setting an elegant tabletop design, the competition is giving these students practical experience and inspiration as they explore the many careers in hospitality.”

In the culinary category, teams were tasked with creating a unique three-course meal consisting of a starter, entrée and dessert that demonstrated their culinary knowledge, skills and creative abilities. Teams were judged on:

The Gaylord team, consisting of Emma Banks, Autumn Daleski, Aneliese Kage, Hunter Maczorowski and Gauge Tulgetske, placed third. DCTC at Riverview Community High School took the top spot and Plymouth Canton Educational Park came in second.
