Dundee Police Department teaches kids about school safety with ice cream

The Dundee Police Department is holding a Cones With Cops event on Monday, Aug. 18, in the Dairy Queen at 606 Tecumseh St.

From 7-8:30 p.m., kids ages kindergarten to eighth grade will receive free ice cream cones while Dundee police officers talk to them about the importance of school safety and reducing bullying in preparation for the new year.

“I hope this has a big impact and it starts changing things,” said the DQ general manager Jody Stewart.

Stewart’s own daughter was bullied so badly in school that she pulled her out to start homeschooling. So, when Dundee Deputy Chief Randy Sehl asked if she wanted to host Cones With Cops she readily said yes.

“That’s often how school violence comes about, is sometimes bullying from way in the past,” Sehl said.

He also said that the children would learn about school safety, including following crossing guard directions and reporting unsafe things.

“That’s the most important, making sure that an adult knows if there’s something unsafe,” he said.
