Detroit Lions UDFA: QB Luke Altmyer injury report

The Lions have signed multiple undrafted free agents after the 2026 NFL Draft ended, including a potential backup quarterback down the road in Luke Altmyer.

Here is the Luke Altmyer medical report:

Medical concern level ranges from 0 (no concern) to 10 (extreme).(Ages in parentheses are at start of 2026 season and are factored into the concern level. Luke Altmyer, QB (23) – Illinois

Altmyer was Matt Miller’s No. 234 overall player.

Medical Concern Level: 1/10

Altmyer had a possible shoulder injury in 2022, which is of course a concern for a quarterback. It’s uncertain if the injury was on his throwing side. Either way, there is minimal concern as he played in the next game, and has three years of proof of recovery since.

The concussion in 2023 appears to be isolated and thus is not a major concern. His age is young for a quarterback as that position can be played deep into the 30’s.

Altmyer got a lot of experience in his five years of college, throwing for 7,924 yards and 60 touchdowns, while completing 63.7% of his passes.

The Lions could use a long-term solution at backup quarterback in case Teddy Bridgewater—age 33 on a 1-year deal—decides to return to high school coaching. Given his undrafted status, I’d expect Altmyer to safely stash on the practice squad for the entire season unless there are injuries ahead of him. Hopefully in 2027, he will be ready to compete for the backup role.
