Clinton defense dominates Sand Creek; BD takes win in girls district

ONSTED – Two Lenawee County rivals met on the hardwood Monday night for the first round of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 3 Girls Basketball Tournament.

Hitting the parquet floor at Concord High School for the first round of district play were the Clinton Redwolves (9-15) taking on the Sand Creek Aggies (6-17) in the first game of the 2025-26 postseason.

Clinton buckled down on defense from the opening tip, never allowing more than four points in a quarter as the Redwolves took care of the Aggies for the 33-14 victory.

Clinton took control of the pre-district contest from the very beginning, outscoring Sand Creek 12-4 in the first quarter and then again 6-4 in the second quarter to build a 18-8 lead at the half.

Even after adjustments at the break for both coaches, the pace of play still favored Clinton, which outscored the Redwolves 21-6 throughout the second half, including 8-4 in the third quarter and 10-2 in the fourth quarter to find the final score of 35-14.

Clinton was led by Annabelle Preston with eight points, Addison Loftis with nine points, Kayline Sposite with seven points, Makaylen Whitehead with five points and Avery Loftis with four points.

In the heartbreaking loss, Sand Creek was led by Macie Smith with six points, followed by Toree Williams, Madalynn Trame, Elise Wilkinson and Adyson Peebles with two points each.

With the devasting defeat, Sand Creek now says goodbye to its 2025-26 season with an overall record of 6-16.

Clinton remains alive in the Division 3 MHSAA District tournament, where it will next advance to take on Blissfield at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Onsted High School.

Britton Deerfield ramps up defense in win district win over Ann Arbor Central

SUMMERFIELD – The Britton Deerfield girls basketball program rolled past Ann Arbor Central Academy on Monday in the first round of the MHSAA Division 4 girls basketball districts, winning 36-18.

The game stayed relatively close early on, with the Patriots holding a slim 9-4 lead after one quarter of play. That five-point lead jumped to a 12-point lead at the half as the Patriots outscored Ann Arbor 9-2 heading into the break.

The third quarter was more of the same as Britton Deerfield outscored Ann Arbor 8-4 before putting the game away with a 10-8 fourth quarter, finding the final score of 36-18.

Leading the way for Britton Deerfield was Ava Delmotte and Kurina Dotson, both with 10 points.

Also adding to the Patriots winning effort was Elayna Thornton with five points; Allie Fraley with four points; Mikenna Allshouse, Lexi Purdy, and Mikayla Becker with two points; and Leah Thornton with one point.

Scoring for Ann Arbor was Trina Alessaway with six points and Teena Alessaway with eight points.

With the win, Britton Deerfield advances to Wednesday’s D4 district semifinals to face a familiar foe in Lenawee Christian, with game time slated for 5:30 p.m. in Summerfield.

With the loss, Ann Arbor Central finishes the 2025-26 season at 2-10 overall.
