Bracketologist states MSU one of few teams in play for No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament

Could Michigan State basketball still play its way into a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament? One bracketologist believes its still a possibility.

Brad Wachtel of Hoops HQ and The Field of 68 posted on social media about the teams still in the running to land one of the four top seeds in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. In Wachtel’s point of view, three of the No. 1 seeds are locked up by Duke, Michigan and Arizona, leaving one spot still up for grabs. So who is in play for that final spot? He believes it’s UConn, Florida and Michigan State.

Wachtel says the Spartans are a “long shot dark horse” to play their way all the way up to a No. 1 seed, but there is at least path forward. In my opinion, that would probably include winning their final two regular season games this week (Rutgers and at Michigan), and then probably winning two games in the Big Ten Tournament to reach title game. Along with doing all of that, the Spartans would also probably need UConn and Florida to slip up at least one more time over the next two weeks.

Michigan State is in the midst of a four-game winning streak, and currently sit at 24-5 overall and 14-4 in Big Ten play. The Spartans are being projected by many as a No. 2 seed at the moment so the possibility of getting up to a No. 1 seed shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. It just is notable to see, considering Michigan State was projected as a No. 4 or 5 seed just a few weeks ago.

Michigan State’s next game is on Thursday against Rutgers. Tipoff from the Breslin Center is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET, with the game set to be televised on Fox Sports 1.
