A Walk in the Park is an ongoing series from State Journal photographer Nick King, who intends to explore Lansing area parks one hour at a time. If you have a suggestion of a park he should visit, email him at nking@lsj.com.
Red Cedar Glen Land Preserve in Okemos is a tranquil park positioned along the Red Cedar River that feels like a hidden escape, a perfect straightforward haven for hikers, birders and nature lovers.
The 15-acre park, located at 1389 Sylvan Glen Drive, welcomes you with a subtle trailhead that quickly immerses you in its diverse landscapes.
More than a mile of pathways offer quiet beauty along the natural trails that meander through thick woods, over hills and along the river. Along the way, sunlight filters through a canopy of trees and paths opening to upland fields alive with the chatter of birds and the rustle of squirrels, deer and other animal life.
The terrain is easy and family-friendly, with some slight elevation to keep things interesting, though low spots can get muddy after rain or melted snow, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. There are designated hiking trails and biking and walking paths in the park as well.
Red Cedar Glen’s trails connect westward to the adjacent Legg Park, blending seamlessly into the 1.6-mile Red Cedar River Loop.
Acquired by Meridian Township in 2006 as part of its Land Preservation Program, this spot protects a mosaic of ecosystems, from floodplain forests and wetland streams to mature upland woods with trees dating back to the 1800s.
Leashed dogs are welcome, making it ideal for a casual outing with your four-legged companion. Some street parking is available on Sylvan Glen Drive, with more parking in a lot nearby at Legg Park off Van Atta Road. There are no bathrooms on site.
