Summer is in full swing, and you don’t have to wait until the weekend to have some fun.

Here’s what we recommend this week:

Celebrate Festival Square’s new look

New art will be revealed in downtown Cheboygan on Tuesday, July 15 at “Festival Square Unveiled: A Celebration of Art & Transformation.”

The event, which will begin at 7 p.m., will highlight community connection, creativity and light as a new collaborative mural at Festival Square is celebrated. The square has also undergone new landscaping to provide a fresh, new feel.

At the event, residents can meet the 20 artists involved in the mural, enjoy live music and light refreshments, and explore artist displays.

Annual Nub’s Nob Art Fair returns

The Harbor Springs Area Chamber of Commerce and Northern Michigan Women’s Club will again host the Nub’s Nob Art Fair.

The fair will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16 at Nub’s Nob Resort.

The fair includes around 70 indoor and outdoor booths filled with art, live music from Pete Kehoe and food from Slightly Gourmet Café.

A suggested cash donation of $5 will allow entry into the event. All proceeds benefit the Harbor Springs chamber and charitable initiatives supported by the Northern Michigan Women’s Club.

Learn about a 1,000-mile solo kayak trip

Thomas Renkes, an author and adventurer, will be the guest speaker for this week’s Coffee @ Ten lecture at the Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey.

Renkes will present “Life on Superior: a 1,000 Mile Kayak Solo” at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 17. The presentation is described as “Come paddle the tempestuous waters of the greatest of the Great Lakes. Try doing it alone in a kayak! Feel the voyage and experience the vicissitudes of the days as you travel along. Bring a lifejacket.”

Guests can also join on Zoom or Facebook. For more information, visit crookedtree.org.

Join Sault artists for Poetry Night

The Sault Area Art Center will host this month’s Poetry Night from 3-5 p.m. on Thursday, July 17.

All are welcome to join in the poetry jam session, where participants read and discuss poems.

Poetry Night takes place on the third Thursday of the month.

GLCO debuts “Rite of Spring”

The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra will present Igor Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” in what is described as a “groundbreaking concert” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 17.

According to GLCO officials, they do not believe the iconic 1913 work has ever been performed in the community.

The performance, done in partnership with DEOS Contemporary Ballet, will feature newly commissioned world-premiere choreography, created exclusively for Northern Michigan audiences.

The concert will be at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts in Bay Harbor. Tickets from $35-$65 can be purchased at glcorchestra.org. The concert is free for veterans, active service members and students age 18 or younger by calling 231-487-0010.
