The two adults suspects were given a $10,000 cash/surety bond and are scheduled to appear in court on March 12, the MSP said in a post on X on March 3.

Officials say a 16-year-old Battle Creek boy also was arrested on charges of smuggling contraband into a prison, possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, and possession with intent to deliver THC.

According to the Michigan State Police, troopers on Feb. 28 received reports from staff at the Newberry facility of a possible smuggling attempt.

Troopers conducted surveillance in the area and then made a traffic stop on a vehicle they say was involved in suspicious activity.

During a subsequent investigation at the prison, staff located a package inside the prison yard containing approximately 100 grams of methamphetamine and 4 ounces of THC wax.

“As a result of the investigation, two adult males were lodged at the Luce County Jail. A juvenile male was also apprehended,” the MSP post on X said.

Troopers were assisted in the investigation by the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team, the Luce County Sheriff’s Office, and staff from Newberry Correctional Facility.

What is the Newberry Correctional Facility?

The Newberry Correctional Facility is in Pentland Township in Luce County, on M-123, and was formerly part of Newberry Regional Mental Health Center.

The facility consists of 1,108 general population beds, and four cells that are used for temporary holding, according to state data.
