Compact SUVs are getting to be like labradoodles: so popular it’s hard to tell one from another.
You’d like yours to get to the Chuckit! ball first, wouldn’t you?
Let me introduce you to the 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan Turbo, the most frolicsome version of the new Tiguan, which debuted a few months ago as a 2025 model.
The base 2025 Tiguan is a bit of a lap dog with just 201 horsepower. That was an improvement from the previous generation 2024 Tiguan, which mustered just 184 hp, but the base 2025 is no greyhound.
The 2026 turbo, by contrast, is a bouncy pup.
The Tiguan turbo is VW’s first acknowledgement that its SUVs should offer a sporty driving experience like the one it helped introduce to compact cars 50 years ago with the legendary Golf GTI.
It’s a fine start.
2026 VW Tiguan turbo key features
How powerful? How much? How big?
On sale now, the turbo is the top model of the 2026 Tiguan. It delivers 268 hp and 258 pound feet of torque from a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine linked to an all-wheel-drive system and eight-speed automatic transmission.
The turbo is the top of the Tiguan model line, with prices starting at $43,085. All prices exclude $1,475 destination charge.
The rest of the Tiguan family has the same gearbox linked to a 201-hp version of the same engine. Prices start at $30,805 for a base front-wheel-drive model and top out at the $43,085 SEL R-Line turbo I drove.
The 2026 model introduces the Tiguan’s third generation with all new sheet metal, interior and electronics. It’s about 1.7 inches shorter than the 2024 model, but 0.4 inch taller and 0.6 inch wider. Ground clearance increases slightly. Nonturbo models are a bit lighter, despite adding new features. The 2025 Tiguuan did not offer a turbo.
The Tiguan competes with compact SUVs like the Chevrolet Equinox and Equinox EV; Ford Escape; Honda CR-V; Hyundai Santa Fe; Ioniq 5; Kia Sportage and EV6; Nissan Rogue; and Toyota RAV4.
Other than the EVs, few compact SUVs offer a sporty model, so the Tiguan turbo has little direct competition.

Driving impressions
The Tiguan turbo’s extra power comes courtesy of a larger turbo that operates at a higher boost pressure than the base engine gets. VW strengthened components, including pistons and connecting rods, to withstand the higher power.
VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system disconnects the rear axle to improve fuel economy under low loads.
Up to 50% of power can go to the rear wheels for slippery surfaces or spirited driving. The stability control system is also tuned for performance and grip.
A “driving experience dial” in the center console manages volume, ambient lighting and drive modes.
That sounds like a usability nightmare, but I found it straightforward and simple. The sport mode delivered responsive steering and improved throttle response that I appreciated driving around in the hills and lakes west of Detroit.
The Tiguan turbo was composed on rough surfaces and sweeping turns under fall foliage.
VW trimmed up to 170 pounds from the Tiguan’s curb weight by eliminating the old model’s nearly useless third row seat and using more aluminum in the suspension and high-strength steel in the body. The savings pays off in fuel economy and handling.
The interior is roomy, comfortable and quiet. The turbo has a standard 15-inch touch screen. Lower trims get 12.9 inches, still more screen space than some competitors offer. All trim levels have a crisp and configurable 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.
Why buy a 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan turbo?
Every mainstream automaker offers at least one compact SUV. They’re all competent, but few are memorable.
The 2026 Tiguan turbo stands out. Its performance, technology and style could convince some old dogs they need to learn new tricks.
