2 officials from Lansing area named finalists for Holt superintendent

DELHI TWP. − Officials from the Potterville and Fowlerville school districts are among six candidates set to be interviewed this month as the Holt school board searches for the district’s next superintendent.

Mark McGarry, a principal and program director for Potterville Public Schools, and Fowlerville Community Schools Superintendent Matthew Stuard are set to be interviewed on March 11, Holt school officials said in a news release.

Stuard was a finalist for the open superintendent position in Okemos but was not chosen as a finalist.

Lisa Dewey, director of student services for Kalamazoo Public Schools, also will be interviewed March 11.

The other three candidates – Au Gres-Sims Superintendent Christopher Ming, Hal Heard III, executive director of student services for Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, and Adel DiOrio, associate superintendent of instruction & technology for the Montcalm Area Intermediate School District −are set to be interviewed on March 12.

The Holt Board of Education is looking for a successor to David Hornak, who announced in December he plans to retire at the end of this year.

The Michigan Association of School Boards is coordinating the search. Nineteen people applied for the job, including nine with prior superintendent experience, the association said.

“We plan to select a candidate by the summer so the new superintendent can work alongside Dr. Hornak to help ensure a smooth transition until his retirement,” Amy Dalton, Holt’s board president, said in the news release. “As we continue this important search, our Board remains committed to ensuring the best possible future for our students, families, educators and learning community.”

The first round of public interviews is the start of “a rigorous vetting process,” Holt officials said.

The interviews will begin at 3:30 p.m. each day in the board room in the administration building, 5780 W. Holt Rd. Families, staff and community members are welcome to attend and provide written feedback.
